I like what Eckhart Tolle says in The Power of Now about how since we are made up of about 99.9999% space, we don’t have to let ANYTHING bother us. He uses the example of a bothersome car alarm going off across the street when you are sitting at home.
What he asks us to do is simply to let any bothersome noise like the car alarm just pass through us as if we were (and we ARE) simply almost all space, and not solid at all.
I practice this often. I like the feeling it gives me. Think of it this way: you are dis-empowering that car alarm from having any effect on you, its sound just passed right through you.
I like to remind everyone that where there is no effect, there is no cause. If the car alarm (or the boss, the bill collector, the used car salesman, the soap commercial, etc etc) cannot affect you, it can’t really mean anything. And when you really think about any of these things, they mean nothing in any real sense of anything that matters. Or am I just full of hot air?
